Thermistors
Thermistors are small components that dramatically change resistance as their temperature changes.
Transistors and other components change value as they warm up and cool down. These resistors attempt to compensate for those changes.
As you can see in the illustration, they look a lot like small capacitors, and are frequently found in the audio sections of sets.
